Forword for my Viola Sonata's approaching performance

FOREWORD

      I can hardly recall.  It was the winter of 1989 in Illinois.  I was a student of the composer Roque Cordero for six months already.  He insisted that I should concentrate on writing good music rather than any music.  He said "There are thousands of composers and it's no point to become just one of them".  It was frustrating, we could not proceed more than eight bars in any piece that I carried to him.

      One night that winter, we went to the school cinema with a friend of mine, Maria.  It was terribly cold and it was raining ice.  After the movie, we took a short walk in the university squad.  Everything was frozen, like an ice palace.  The trees, the branches were shining with ice.  We had difficulty walking on the ice, we held onto each other not to fall down.

      I wrote the second movement of the Viola Sonata in three days after that night.  Dr. Cordero was a little bit astonished and said "OK this is not bad but you should write it again and make it more elaborate and tender" moving his hands in parallel from up to down and showing elaborations by moving his fingers. 

      The Second Movement was performed as a standalone piece by Tuba Özkan(viola) and Seher Tanrıyar(piano) under the auspices of Teri Mason of BORUSAN Kültür Sanat Office in May 2000.  It was one of the moments of my career as a composer that Viola artist Ruşen Güneş listened it.  After the concert, he said he is arranging concerts of viola works and then asked me if I would write something.  I said I would love to write a first and third movement and make it a Sonata.

      Ruşen Güneş and Judith Uluğ(piano) played the Viola Sonata at BORUSAN Kültür Sanat Office in April 2001 for the first time.

Vorwort

Ich kann es kaum zurückrufen. Es war der Winter 1989 in Illinois. Ich war ein Schüler von der Komponist Roque Cordero für sechs Monate schon. Er bestand darauf, dass ich sollte konzentrieren mich auf das Schreiben guter Musik anstatt jede Musik zu schreiben. Er sagte: "Es gibt Tausende von Komponisten und es hat keinen Sinn, nur einer von ihnen zu werden. "Es war frustrierend, wir nicht fortfahren könnte mehr als acht Takte in jedem Stück, dass ich an ihm durchgeführt.

Eine Nacht in diesem Winter, gingen wir ins Kino mit einem Schulfreund von mir, Maria.  Es war ziemlich kalt und es regnete Eis. Nach dem Film nahmen wir einen kurzen Spaziergang in der Universitätsplatz. Alles wurde eingefroren, wie ein Eispalast. Die Bäume, wurden die Zweige mit Eis scheint. Wir hatten Schwierigkeiten beim Gehen auf dem Eis, wir aufeinander gehalten, nicht zu fallen.

Den zweiten Satz der Viola-Sonate schrieb ich in drei Tagen nach dieser Nacht. Dr. Cordero war ein wenig erstaunt und sagte: "OK, das ist nicht schlecht, aber man sollte schreiben es wieder und machen es aufwändiger und zart " und dann bewegt seine Hände parallel von oben nach unten und zeigt Ausarbeitungen  durch seine Finger bewegen.

Der zweite Satz wurde als eigenständiges Stück für Tuba Özkan (Viola) und Seher Tanrıyar (Klavier) durchgeführt unter der Schirmherrschaft des Teri Mason von BORUSAN Kultur Kunst Amt im Mai 2000. Es war einer der Momente meiner Karriere als Komponist, dass Viola Künstler Ruþen Güneþ hörte es.Nach dem Konzert sagte er, er arrangiert Konzerte aus Viola Stücke und fragte mich, ob ich etwas zu schreiben.  Ich sagte, ich würde gerne schreiben einen ersten und dritten Satz und machen es zu einem Sonata.

Ruşen Güneş und Judith Uluğ (Klavier) spielte das Violasonate bei Borusan Culture and Arts Amt im April 2001 zum ersten Mal.

Ali R+ SARAL has studied double majors and has two Master’s degrees,

MSc and BSC from Istanbul Technical University and MM from Illinois State University.

 He was accepted to the Istanbul State Conservatoir Composition and Theory Department and

studied harmony, counterpoint and others with Erçivan SAYDAM,  

composition with İlhan USMANBAŞ. 

He was a student of Roque CORDERO and Arthur CORRA at USA.

 He has attended courses at Stanford University CCRMA lab and Darmstad 1996. 

He has written 62 works of music longer than 15 hours long.
